Bahrain aims to reach "zero neutrality" in terms of carbon emissions by the year 2060. To achieve this goal, the Kingdom of Bahrain has adopted a set of initiatives to remove carbon, including doubling the mangroves by establishing a group of agricultural nurseries to produce thousands of mangroves to rehabilitate a number of areas, planting 140,000 trees in public streets and squares, and planting 110,000 mangroves in approved sites according to the afforestation plan in the Kingdom of Bahrain.
The afforestation plan aims to double the number of trees by 2035, with mangroves four times as per the goals of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP26).
The Ministry of Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture prepared a draft of green building requirements with an initiative to start introducing the concept of green building within the local building requirements.
The green buildings, renewable and sustainable energy Initiative was activated by applying green building elements to the designs of new schools, in coordination with the Ministry of Education, based on the important strategic objectives supported by the Ministry within its strategic plan.

The Botanical Atlas Project was launched via the National Geographic Database (GIS) platform (bahrainlocator.gov.bh), which includes a set of vegetation cover maps and their classifications, types, areas and locations of agricultural crops in the Kingdom by employing satellite images and remote sensing techniques, as well as the use of Field surveys that contributed to the production of spatial information slides.
The outputs of this project contribute to measuring the plant health index in the Kingdom by measuring the vitality and greenness of the vegetation cover. The types of agricultural habitats such as gardens, parks, shrubs, salt marshes, muddy areas have also been identified and classified, in addition to identifying the types of vegetation cover such as trees, shrubs, and herbaceous plants.
