Sustainability

Sustainability is one of the fundamental principles upon which the Bahrain Economic Vision 2030 is based, and it focuses on a range of key issues, including sustainable environmental and resource management, urban development, water, energy, transportation, urban growth, waste management, marine conservation, biodiversity and more.

Accordingly, the Kingdom of Bahrain has established many government institutions and committees to develop programs, policies and strategies to achieve sustainability in its various dimensions. Additionally, many laws and regulations related to sustainable development have been enacted.

The Kingdom of Bahrain has also signed several multilateral agreements related to sustainability and continues to fulfil its commitments in this regard despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Sustainable Mosque Project

With the aim of highlighting the responsibility towards the environment and the importance of using modern and environmentally friendly technologies in order to stimulate the national trend towards sustainability and reduce resource consumption, the Supreme Council for Environment designed and constructed the sustainable mosque, which relies in its design on alternative sources of energy and different methods of water reuse, especially water for washing.

The sustainable mosque works to reuse wash water after purification to fill irrigation tanks to be used in irrigation of trees and mosque garden plants, cleaning the building as well as making organic fertilizer, which contributes to saving the quantities of consumed water, energy and costs, and this is done according to a system to save electricity and use renewable energy via solar panels installed on the roof of the mosque.
