Healthcare in the Kingdom of Bahrain

Your health matters. This is why the Kingdom of Bahrain provides a comprehensive healthcare system that takes care of you and your family.

The Supreme Council of Health is responsible for setting strategies and national direction, while the National Health Regulatory Authority (NHRA) provides regulation, and the Ministry of Health acts as the sector’s primary manager and operator.

Healthcare for All

Over the years, the Kingdom of Bahrain has supported its people with advanced healthcare solutions and programs. Ensuring a healthy nation has always been a top priority for its governments, which met an ambitious “Healthcare for All” objective in the 1990s. Today, it continues to provide a range of free and subsidised healthcare services to citizens and residents alike.

This includes many efforts that are in line with Goal 3 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals: to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages.

National Health Information Program (I-SEHA)

The Ministry of Health, in cooperation with its partners, provides quality, regulated, and comprehensive health services that are affordable, sustainable, and attainable to all citizens in the Kingdom. It formulates and implements health policies while ensuring an efficient and effective use of resources.

The Ministry of Health now offers its services through the National Health Information Program (I-SEHA). In line with the ministry’s Information and Communication Technology (ICT) strategy, I-SEHA is a comprehensive, national healthcare system that serves the public by making online transactions faster and more efficient. Its advanced infrastructure connects government agencies to avoid duplication of effort and cost.

Commitment to quality, efficiency, and reliability

In line with efforts to provide, support, and develop healthcare services and make them more efficient and safe, Law No. (38) of 2009 established National Health Regulatory Authority (NHRA). NHRA manages healthcare policies in the Kingdom, regulating both public and private sector healthcare providers, managing the licensing of both the healthcare providers and employees, and ensuring that they follow best practices and the latest methodologies. NHRA also registers and prices medicine, licenses medicine factories, investigates patient complaints, verifies when medical errors occur, and approves requests for clinical medical research.

National Health Strategy

The Supreme Council of Health, which helps implement the national health strategy, which covers all health offerings in the Kingdom, including development of healthcare workers’ skills. It regulates doctors, technicians, and other professionals, ensuring that they are qualified to provide the highest levels of service.

Free Healthcare

If you’re a citizen, your healthcare is free from the moment you’re born. The Kingdom provides health services which cater to every stage of your life. The Ministry of Health also provides medical care to the elderly patients in the Kingdom through mobile units and home visits for those who unable to visit health centers. The elderly also receive social services from the Ministry of Social Development, which include day care services, residential care services, and social assistance.

People with special needs are cared for by Abdullah Bin Ali Kanoo Center for Diagnosis and Evaluation of Disability, which was established in 2014, in cooperation with the Ministry of Health.

Mother and childcare

We ensure the protection of youngsters and future generations by providing them with the necessary vaccinations via an Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI). We also look after their mothers, providing a dedicated mother and children unit in every hospital.

These services are supported by health awareness campaigns, which the government carries out at schools and universities with the cooperation of the Ministry of Health. In addition, the health care system in Bahrain displays emphasis on mothers and children, as there is a specified unit in every hospital. These efforts are in line with the Sustainable Development Goals - Goal No. 3: to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages.
