Licensing of special foods (e.g., athletes’ food, nutritional supplements, baby food from 5-36 months, energy drinks)

Issuing certificates for the licensing of special foods for merchants and importers. The process is carried out in accordance with the procedures, legal control and documents required for licensing and circulating these products in the Kingdom of Bahrain

Service Conditions

  • Prepare a file containing the requirements stated in the special food items form

Required Attachments

  • Copy of the commercial registration certificate
  • Copy of a certificate of permission to practice commercial activities subject to health controls for the import and sale of functional and health foods, as well as nutritional supplements
  • Copy of the applicant’s Identity Card
  • Two clear copies (colored) of the outer and inner packaging of the product, as well as the educational leaflet (signed and sealed by the producing company)
  • The Nutrition facts label and accompanying explanatory data must be displayed in Arabic. When one or more other languages ​​are used, all information in other languages ​​must be identical to the Arabic
  • For products subject to the National Health Regulatory Authority (NHRA) classification, an approved certificate (signed and stamped) for product classification issued by NHRA is required
  • A certificate of permission to sell (approved and licensed in the country of origin) outlining the date of marketing the product and its authorization to be used in the country of origin
  • The laboratory analysis file of the product’s composition (with the exact composition of each ingredient, as well as the source and function of each ingredient) from the accredited laboratory (Certificate of Good Laboratory Practice may be required). The analysis file is provided by the producing company only
  • A valid Good Manufacturing Practice Certificate signed and stamped by a licensed body in the country of origin, proving the factory’s manufacturing license
  • A sample of the product should be attached if requested by the relevant department
  • Any other documents or information required by the relevant department

Further documents to be provided (if any):

  • Certificate showing the product is alcohol-free
  • Certificate showing the product is pork-free
  • Copy of a previous license certificate issued to the product by the Nutrition Section
  • Copy of a previous license certificate issued for the product by a GCC country

Legal Regulations

  • Law No. (13) of 2021 issuing the executive regulations of the Public Health Law promulgated by Law No. (34) of 2018 (the 6th section concerning special food and similar items, including the regulation of energy drinks)
  • Law No. (4) of 1995 regarding the control of the use, marketing and promotion of breast milk substitutes
  • Resolution No. (7) of 2018 concerning the procedures and controls over the use, marketing or promotion of breast milk substitutes.

Service Processes

  • Submit the application to the Food Control Section
  • Nutrition Department verifies that the licensing requirements have been met and all required documents complete
  • The products are analysed in the Nutrition Section of the Public Health Department in accordance with approved procedures and laws
  • License certificate is issued
