Primary healthcare services through public and private healthcare providers are the foundation of Bahrain’s healthcare system, one of the region’s most advanced.
Healthcare is free of charge for Bahraini citizens at government hospitals and health centres across all governorates, and available for a nominal fee for non-Bahrainis.
Under the National Social Health Insurance Program (Sehati), Bahrainis and domestic workers receive free health coverage from the government, while other expatriate employees are covered by their employers.

We understand the special requirements of motherhood and childhood, which is why Bahrain’s healthcare system has a dedicated unit in every hospital for child and maternal care. The Ministry of Health provides preventive healthcare to all mothers and children before and after birth. The government’s commitment to their well-being is in line with Bahrain Economic Vision 2030 to achieve sustainability in human development, and its endeavor to achieve Goal 3 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages.
Two of the most important elements shaping Kingdom’s healthcare system are ensuring health and high quality of life for mothers and their children. Maternal healthcare starts from the beginning of the pregnancy period, covering regular follow-up of the fetus’ condition and the health of the mother until delivery. The health of the newborn child is also looked after, including free vaccinations as per a set schedule. There are also awareness programmes for mothers during the postpartum period, covering topics such as breastfeeding, children’s vaccinations, and more.
A birth certificate and ID card are issued for each newborn, followed by periodic vaccinations for children from birth until their entry into schools.
