Protection of the Environment and the Natural Resources

 The Kingdom of Bahrain has made great efforts in ensuring the sustainability of the development process in multiple areas - reflected in the Constitution of the Kingdom; the National Action Charter approved by 98.4% of the people to ensure the protection of the environment and balance the requirements of development, social and economic aspects; as well as in the vision and strategy of Bahrain Economic Vision 2030 and the National Strategic Master Plan 2030. The Kingdom has also established many institutions, agencies, and commissions involved in the development programmes, policies, and strategies to achieve sustainability in various dimensions. It has also enacted a number of laws related to sustainable development applications that have become a requirement in economic, social, and political transitions to the international community. Furthermore, it has followed many multi-lateral conventions and compliance with its requirements - ensuring public awareness and national capacity-building in relevant areas.

Environment Protection Focus Areas

Bahrain has made great strides in the area of economic, social, and environmental development within a few decades. It has strived for sustainable and harmonious growth with ecosystems and evolution in various areas, meeting the Kingdom's commitments to achieve the Millennium Development Goals.

As the Kingdom is striving to get closer to achieve its goals in the environmental protection field, the below are the main areas in which the country has shown constant involvement and eagerness to conserve:

  1. Energy:

Multiple government entities showed keen interest towards energy conservation by adapting a number of initiatives, such as the green policy, the reduction of the usage of material, equipment, substances that impacts the environment negatively, and optimal utilization of resources.

The Government has also formed a committee that will specialize in researching for alternative environment-safe energy, and encouraging the adoption of these sources among government entities, businesses, residents, and citizens.

  1. Water:

With an aim to conserve water, the country felt the need to found a council that would take the responsibility of protecting, developing, and contain the sustainability of water resources along with other administrative and regulatory procedures; hence, the Water Resources Council was founded, along with other key supporting initiatives.

  1. Air Quality:

As one of the key elements in environment protection, Bahrain has addressed this through constant monitoring of air quality through various monitoring stations placed in different locations in the kingdom around the clock along with implementing other environmental projects that contribute to the reduction of environment pollution.

  1. Biodiversity:

In order to preserve the marine and wildlife in Bahrain, the country has devoted six areas for the purpose of establishing natural reserves, this included five Marine Protected Areas, which are: Hawar Islands, Gulf of Tubli, Dohat Arad, Mashtan Island and Herr Bulthamah, and a Wildlife Sanctuary: AlAreen Wildlife Park.

  1. Land Use and Desertification:

The Kingdom, through the Ministry of Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning and in cooperation with other ministries and institutions, is working on preparing detailed drawings for strategic structural plan for the Kingdom of Bahrain in 2030; based on several development requirements without compromising the environment and preserving its resources and development.

  1. Coastal Areas:

Among the many efforts to protect the coastal areas, the country has emphasized that during planning a project, and considering the projects' environmental-effects; necessary studies to protect coastal areas are prepared prior to the approval of the proficient authorities. The country has also adopted the concept of integrated management of the coastal and marine environment in urban planning for strategic structural plan for Bahrain in 2030.

  1. Chemical substances:

Many resolutions have been announced to address and control the chemical substances used in the country, such as placing control of substances that deplete the ozone layer, restriction and control on equipment and buildings containing asbestos, control on the import and use of banned and severely restricted chemicals, management of dangerous chemical materials, and the adoption of the Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM).

  1. Waste:

As part of the country’s environment protection plan to control waste, the kingdom has adopted a national contingency plan for combating oil spills, the management of hazardous waste and healthcare waste, as well as adopting projects that address the need to recycle electronics (Recycling IT).
